This walking tour of London is a wonderful introduction to the sights and sounds of London town. This trip is generally by foot though if your interests take us that way, we may also make short trips on the tube. First of all, we will meet at Westminster and walk to the Houses of Parliament and see the giant clock tower of Big Ben. Avoiding the statues of old Kings, Queens and Prime Ministers we will then make our way to Westminster Abbey whose origins date back to Edward Confessor back before the Normans in the 11thC century. Westminster Abbey is well known as the place of all Royal Coronations right up to our present Queen, Queen Elizabeth II and was also the site of the Royal Wedding with Prince William and Kate Middleton. Leaving Westminster behind we take the short walk up to visit the gates of Downing Street, the home of the British Prime Minister and Chancellor amongst others. This is the heart of government and all the surround imposing buildings are full of the comings and goings of government. As we continue, we pause at The Cenotaph, our primary national memorial to the fallen of the war-dead. Continuing towards Trafalgar Square we will briefly visit Horse-guards Parade, home of the Household Cavalry. Trafalgar Square itself is massive and surrounded by galleries and museums all of which are well worth a visit. The square itself is dominated by Nelsons Column built to commemorate Lord Nelson following his magnificent though tragic victory at Trafalgar. There will be time enough to take some classic London photos next to the fountains and lion statues. From Trafalgar Square, we will wonder up towards theatreland with an optional visit to Covent Garden. Then onwards through Leicester Square, home of film premiers and on to Picadilly Circus, Londons answer to Time Square, New York. China Town is just a few streets away and from there we will enter the realms of the Royal Parks as we make our way towards Buckingham Palace, home of The Queen and from where we might be lucky enough to see the famous Changing of The Guards. An extended tour option is also available where we may take the tube to nearby St Pauls Cathedral before having an ice-cream by the Thames under the shadow of the famous Tower Bridge. Behind us will be the walls of the Tower of London sites of countless executions and more latterly a museum and home of the Crown Jewels forever protected by the loyal Beefeater soldiers and the famous ravens who are said to safeguard our realm. Sir Winston Churchill must have believed this tale as during WW2 he made sure the birds were not allowed to fly off.
